Field and Work Experience:
Game Commission,Game Lands (May 17 – June 30, 2004)
- Used compass, topographic maps and hand held computer unit with built in GPS to locate breeding logs in the Management Area.
University of XXYZ, Forestry Department (May – Aug 2003)
- Measured tree diameter breast height, tree height with laser, and assessed tree health based on number categories for foliage, tree tops, limbs and trunks.
- Gathered and recorded data on hand-held DOS computers.
- Marked the center of each plot with GPS, used clinometer to find slope and crown densiometer to find crown density.
- Data entry, issued letters of consent assessment and manifest violations using Microsoft Access and Word.
- Assisted in on-site evaluations of hazardous waste facilities.
- Planted white pine saplings inside a 20 acre area enclosed with 8 feet high deer fence.
- Deer fence keeps most white-tailed deer outside the 20 acre clear cut to show the differences in forest regeneration inside the fenced in area as compared to outside the enclosure.
Additional Volunteer Experience:
XXYZ State Game Commission,PA (January 2002)
- Captured white-tailed deer with drop nets and cannon nets using shelled corn as bait.
- Anesthetized deer using tranquilizers and blind folds.
- Ear tags and neck collars were put on the deer for future studies.
PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources White-tail Deer Faecal Count,
State Forest, PA (March 2002)
- Estimated white-tailed deer abundance by counting piles of deer droppings within 3 feet of each side of the fixed-width line transects.
- The totals for each transect were used to estimate the deer abundance in the study area.
Game Commission Check Stations, (November 2002 – 2003)
- Analyzed black bear by weight, sex, presence of disease or parasites, pulled lower canine for genetics tests and answered hunters and public questions concerning black bears.
Northern Study, PA. (October 2002)
- Captured migrating saw-whet owls with mist nets by continuously playing auditory calls.
- Analyzed the owls by wing, bill and weight measurements, sex.
- Each owl was fitted with the proper leg bands for future identification.
Evaluation, Black State Park, PA (April 2003)
- Tested soil for pH and color with Soil Chart.
- Tested water for pH and dissolved oxygen and nitrate levels.
